42T Rear Sprocket
on: June 07, 2021, 07:17:44 AM
Anyone tried a 42T rear on their bike? By my calculations it will fit with the OEM 18T front and leave just enough slot room left for chain adjustment. I know 43T fits no worries. Just looking at it for a long highway trip coming up. Not wanting to put a 19T on the front though.

Hey Peter I just installed a 42 for the dragstrip and it fit, axle is almost all the way back for sure.
It'll be fine for me but I don't know about having enough adjustment room for on the road with chain stretch. I guessing with a used chain it might be okay. YMMV.

Thanks Dan. I stuck a 43T on mine now and seen that you actually could just get a 42T on it. I'll leave the 43T on it now. If your SWB with yours still at the drag strip, then I reckon a 42T will see a good improvement. A few more revs needed at launch, but you should be able to get on it a bit earlier and accelerate better  :028:

Hi Peter, With the smaller rear sprocket is the ride any better at low speed, i mean at 30-50KPH like riding in town etc. I find it a bit chugging if i don't slip the clutch fairly often. Hard to keep it smooth at a constant low KPH.

It rides fine yeah. You maybe find that your dropping back another gear just chugging around to where you were before. Drops about 400 to 500rpm out of it down the highway at 100kmh, which I wanted. Still power wheelies no probs, but just doesn't come up as quick. I like it anyway.

I feel the same way about the 42, the wheelies are more controllable, it doesn't intermediately snap up into my face.
The 46 seems a like little too much gearing for a s/c bike. I think for the street I'll end up at 43, maybe even a 44.

Can someone who knows stuff about gearing explain to me the advantage of the 18/46 gearing over say 16/41 that has the same ratio?

Have a 44 tooth on mine, the bike pulls just fine. Say I want to pass someone, if there is a bit of room I will just leave it in 6th gear, pass just fine. If the room available is less, I will drop it down into 5th or maybe 4th and get there quicker! But, I have never gotten to max speed. Quit @ 150 mph and still had plenty left to go, but dang that felt fast.
