The CF rear wheel that I watched come apart on the 848 didn't just break, it exploded/shattered.

I not sure but I think there are several motorcycle race sanctioning organizations that do not allow CF wheels.

I recently purchased a (used) bike that had aftermarket Marchesini Forged wheels mounted. I didn't like the color (gold), so I swapped them for my wife's (same bike) OEM cast set (black). The front weighed the same, the rear was just under a pound less on the forged wheel. $2500+ for the set to save a pound?

I've seen several CF wheels with cracks in the middle around the spokes. Exploding is a worst case scenario of course, wonder maybe this guys wheels had already unnoticed cracks.....
About forged wheels, there's the advantage point of the stronger more homogeneous structure in comparison to cast.
The weight depends on the used alloy mix and construction, but I agree for road use: cast or alloy is a very relative discussion.

And just to be clear, the CF wheel I watched come apart was a Dymag, not BST. And that was about 19 years ago so I'm confident that the mfg technology has come a long way.
